The Gotrax EBE1 is a basic electric bike model in Gotrax’s range of electric bikes (check all models here). It is impressively convenient, easy to master folding electric bike that quickly collapses small for transport or storage. When it comes to folding electric bikes there are two main concerns. Is it big big enough to be comfortable, and is it small enough to not get in the way. And the new $599 Gotrax EBE1 folding electric bike might just be the answer to your concerns.
In addition to having a great price, the Gotrax EBE1 caught my attention for its convenient folding design, and positive consumer experiences and reviews. It features compact and foldable design weighing 56 lbs and collapses down to a very small size making it ideal for transport or storage. I must admit that the weight of this model is a bit over similar models available on the market, but nothing that will bother you too much.
Design and Features of Gotrax EBE1 Folding Electric Bike
The Gotrax EBE1 features minimalist design. The design includes a battery integrated into the frame, and it has a simple user interface. It can be ridden in 3 different modes: throttle only mode, pedal assist, and pedal only mode. However, it isn’t a perfect bike, but by and large, it has serious potential as a affordable and reliable last-mile commuter electric bike.
The ride is quite good for a small folding bike. With 16″ wheels the EBE1 has great portability and it folds into a small package with no problems. On the other hand, you can’t expect super comfort and smooth ride on those 16″ wheels. Something you get, something you loose whit these small folding e-bikes. Also, there’s no front suspension on the Gotrax EBE1. Don’t worry, this is kind of a standard when it comes to small folding electric bikes. For smoother ride over the bumps you do get rear suspension and it assists well to those 16″ wheels. This isn’t high-end bike suspension, it’s more a simple assistance for smoother ride, but it helps when you hit sidewalk cracks or potholes.
Compact geometry with a short wheelbase and a steep headtube angle give the EBE1 a short turning radius. But, be aware that the small front wheel combined with narrow-ish handlebar may distract you in sharp turns. The small wheels roll a fair amount slower than larger wheels, but we didn’t have problems to achieve top speed of 15.5 mph, and on a steep downhill you will get even faster than that. The rider needs almost o time to get accustomed to the EBE1, and its ride quality is more than satisfying, considering its design.
When it comes to comfort and riders’height there are some limitations. This is not ultra comfortable e-bike, but it is comfortable enough for commuting. Especially when you are in throttle only mode. Also, there is soft cushioned seat with two springs underneath, enough to support rider’s weight. Be aware that this model is not the right choice for 6-footers, since the range of seat height adjustment is inadequate for proper leg extension for pedaling. So, if you are tall like me, avoid this model and choose larger one. But, for those under 6 feet it is quite good choice and comfortable enough.
The Gotrax EBE1 features single-speed design for hassle-free ride without tinkering or adjustment required to keep the bike running smoothly. At the same time, in case the battery runs out, is hard to pedal around, especially uphill. The mechanical disc brakes are finishing the job quite well and the bike completely stops from top speed in less than 25 feet.
Motor, Battery, Speed and Range of Gotrax EBE1 Electric Bike
The Gotrax EBE1 has a 350W brushless rear hub motor that provides a reasonable power output, and this bike can easily get up to its 15.5 mph top speed on flat ground. It gets up to speed quickly on throttle alone and can overcome some smaller hills without dropping much speed. This is not the case when it comes to more serious hills, and in this case you need to engage pedal assist mode.
As a power source it uses removable 36V 7.5Ah high capacity battery enabling the bike to run as fast as 28 miles on a single charge (when on pedal assist mode). The battery is incorporated into the main tube of the frame. After the battery drains you need up to 5 hours to fully recharge it. The battery is removable, so you don’t need to get the whole bike relatively close to an outlet for charging. Just pull out the battery and recharge it.
Controls of the Gotrax EBE1 are basic with one ON/OFF switch, throttle incorporated into right handle and light switch on the left side of a handlebar. also, on the right side there is a battery indicator showing you how much juice is left in the battery. The simplicity of the controls means that you will master them in no time and they are easy to use.
